Pirate radio is illegal or unregulated radio transmission. If you tune around the FM band in London, at the weekend or during the evening, you are likely to reveal a large number of pirate radio stations. Pirate radio stations are everywhere in London, born in the 60s from rusting anti-aircraft towers in the mouth of river Thames. Today's broadcasts are hidden in plain sight, transmitting via homemade rooftop antennas. These are instantly recognisable, because they have a very distinctive sound—often playing musical styles such as House, UK Garage, Grime, Drum ’n’ Bass, Reggae, and numerous “Old Skool” genres. They are also very personal, with large amounts of listener interaction, and are sometimes aimed towards a specific community.
